Design in Business

Landing page is the #1 thing that every business should have, no matter what you do.

That’s pretty much the easiest way to convey crucial information to your audience and tell the world about your product.

The problem is that none of us fully understand what makes some landings great and others bad. What makes people click ‘Add to Cart’ and others ‘Close Tab’?

In this article, I wanted to give you some practical advice to see this invisible line between no sales and big conversions that I learned throughout my career as a senior UI/UX designer and an agency owner.

So, let’s begin.

1. Not Putting CTAs In The Right Place

That’s probably the most common mistake that I see everywhere I go.

Let’s say you’ve spent 30 seconds scrolling the website, analyzing all the information, and understanding where you’re at.

Now, it’s time for you to take the next step, whether it’s to buy something, subscribe to someone, or literally any key action that you take.

However, you just can’t find a way to do that; you don’t see any call to action at the block where it obviously should be. In another way, the designer hasn’t left you any clues about where you should make this ‘key action’.

As a result, you keep scrolling for several seconds more, still can’t find any CTAs, and end up closing the tab.

Never think that the user is smart enough to scroll back to the top or to the bottom, where CTAs are usually located.

Everything should be obvious, so you, the potential customer, won’t spend any additional seconds thinking, choosing, or anything else.

That’s your goal: to make a perfect roadmap where people will be able to do what you want them to do.

Below you can see a simple example of the website that I’ve recently designed.

2. Using Too Much of Text

The website isn’t your other article. A website is something much more complex, and you can’t communicate with the user in the same way as you do everywhere else.

Your task is to convey information most interestingly. In this way, you’ll use the bare minimum of text and the needed amount of design elements.

In other words, forget about everything you know about copywriting in general. You won’t need to write all these paragraphs on the website.

In fact, there’s even a specific sphere called UX writing that learns how to fulfill the website properly and communicate with the user effectively by using text.

Anyway, using too much text will kill your website, no matter whether it’s a landing, a site portfolio, or an e-commerce store.

Nobody wants to spend minutes of their lives reading just another letter; people come to immediately see the information and see something valuable for themselves.

And I’ll prove it to you. Below you can see a block that I took from the website of my friend

Matt Giaro

and right next to it, the version that I’ve made in 5 minutes or less.

You don’t need to be a professional designer to see the difference.

We removed all the unnecessary text and added some simple design elements to differentiate the most crucial information and the key points from everything else.

As a result, the whole block became 3 times smaller and much easier to read and understand.

That’s the power of design — make everything simpler & easier to understand.

Nothing should be complex for a user, so choose the right way to convey your information to them.

3. Not Enough of Space

There’s no need to try to put as much information as possible in a few pixels.

You shouldn’t forget about giving more space to the elements. That would make the overall experience much easier and would also divide the blocks of information more effectively.

The common mistake that I see is that you try to put as many items in the rooms as possible without worrying how they’ll look.

The truth is that it will look like a pile of garbage. In other words, there are an infinite number of things that you’re not interested in and won’t even pay attention to.

When things are too packed, it’s like a jumbled conversation where everyone talks but no one listens. Space gives your content a clear voice.

Let’s talk about readability. When everything is squished together, it’s like trying to read a book with no paragraphs. Pretty hard, isn’t it?

Space between lines, images, and sections makes your content breathable and comprehensible.

Remember, easy on the eyes, easy on the mind.

Spacing is simply another tool to control the attention of a user in the way you want. Spacing is the only way to give the right vibe to your brand and make it more aesthetic.

As always, take a look at the simple example that I’ve made to showcase to you the importance of not sticking to each other.
